Beyond the Devil’s Gate is polyrhythmic throughout, alternating between 3:2 and 2:3 time. A series of abrupt modulations interrupt the tranquil mood of this piece, and it is concluded with an exciting recapitulation at a much faster tempo. The title refers to a landmark on the South Coast, and the almost completely uninhabited wilderness that lies beyond it.
