In 'Burlesque I', alternate major and minor chords in the piano frame the bassoon’s interjections, leading to a jazz-like section featuring extended harmonies. 'Burlesque II' focuses on the interplay between rapidly articulated melodic fragments in the bassoon and the piano’s staccato chords. Juxtaposed with these faster sections are brief sustained sections, the last of which for piano alone leads to a final flourish and the piece’s conclusion.
Two Burlesques for bassoon and piano were composed in December 2018 in Xinzheng, Henan, China.
