About

Cerulean Haze was “composed in order to facilitate a collaboration between The JAC (a Wellington-based contemporary jazz octet) and Stroma. I was excited to take on the challenge of composing for this multi-tradition ensemble as I am interested in bridging the divide between the art worlds of jazz and concert music. It was important to me that the piece incorporate personalized environments for improvisation to showcase some of the members of the JAC, and I also wished to explore a variety of sub combinations within the two ensembles, so that neither ensemble was predominant with the other relegated to an accompanying role. The title of the piece alludes to the hazy evening sky that I saw outside my window while composing, as well as to mixing or combining colours."

Cerulean Haze was a finalist in the 2018 APRA Best Jazz Composition prize.
