About
Descent (in the Spirit of Catastrophe) follows a choreographic logic. The player rubs the cello and the bow against each other, the position at the end of one stroke suggesting what the next motion should be, generally favouring the vertical stroke over the horizontal. Sound arises as a consequence of the motions rather than as its own end, an inevitable coincidence.
This piece is written as part of Fish In Pink Gelatine, a ‘staged concert’ and ‘performed installation’ that explores the innate multimodality of performed music. Constructed of solo instrumental compositions, FIPG consider the corporeal, tactile, political, visible, architectural, social and aural elements of music as equally present and vitally interlinked. The compositions are re-combined and re-directed for FIPG events, but can also stand alone as concert pieces.
