I spontaneously started composing Awaiting the Call in mid 2017. I obsessively and exclusively worked on it until it was nearly complete, just a few days later. The coda took a bit longer though; I wasn’t able to write an ending that I was happy with until the following week.
The first section is based on a simple, yet expressive melody. It is harmonised in a variety of ways, and it is supported by a flowing broken-chord accompaniment. 7th and 9th chords are prominent, and there are frequent and abrupt modulations. The second section consists of a series of highly articulated and ornamented melodic fragments, which are presented in call and response. The upper and lower voices alternate, and both gradually ascend in pitch, until a dramatic climax is reached. The first section is then repeated, before the piece is concluded with a colourful coda.
