About

In ‘The Man Who Didn’t Believe in the Franchise’ Miriama Young sets, in a Victorian steampunk style, a tongue-in-cheek poem submitted to the Pelorus Guardian on 26 September 1893.

“He didn’t believe in the franchise
Said women could cook and wash;
But that they should vote in elections
Was simply the greatest bosh.

But as soon as it was lawful,
He rushed at the risk of his life
Down to the Registrar’s Office
To head the roll there with his wife."
