This short ‘encore’ piece was written especially for Luca Manghi, whom I have known as a friend and colleague for many years. We have both been tutors at the annual New Zealand Opera School in Whanganui. The year I wrote this, there was a particularly persistent tui whose call could be heard across the Wanganui Collegiate grounds where the school is held and which often interrupted my thoughts. I’m pleased to say that at this year’s school (2018), the tui was still there.
