Tako-tsubo was commissioned by Columba College in Dunedin for performance by Cantus Columba at The Big Sing, 2013. It is written for high school voices but is also suitable for adult singers.

The song sets a poem by Dunedin writer, Sue Wootten (who has taught at Columba College). The title is Japanese for a heart attack, brought on by emotional distress - in other words, a broken heart literally! The text creates images of breathlessness and panic brought on by a heart attack, while also reflecting on the feelings that are stored within the character.

The music adopts a lively and quirky mood, although there are moments of repose and reflection as well.
