Five of these six settings of Russian and Belarusian folk and popular songs for, variously, violin and piano, viola and piano and violin, viola and piano were made in January 2016 for a New Year’s concert at the Russian Centre for Science and Culture in Kuala Lumpur to be held later that month. The arrangements were performed on that occasion by Sepideh Asgharzadeh (violin), Katia Tiutiunnik (viola), and Ross James Carey (piano). A sixth arrangement, Kalinka for violin and piano was subsequently added to the set.
The arrangements have been made in a largely modern style that owes something to the harmonic language of twentieth century Soviet-era composers such as Kabalevsky. A number of the arrangements also include my own original material in the form of added codas. The pieces can be performed individually or as a set. If performed as the latter, the given order should be followed.
