About
The Nor’ West Arch is a meteorological phenomenon that occurs above Canterbury, New Zealand. It is characterised by a clear blue sky with an arch of very high white cloud over the Southern Alps. A very hot and strong north-westerly wind always comes with it, sometimes bringing heatwave-like temperatures to Canterbury.
It is recognised as causing psychological effects to people and is statistically linked with increases in suicide and domestic violence. Many people affected feel depressed, irritable and lacking in energy. The arch brings a sense of foreboding with it.
In this piece I have tried to evoke the many different emotions associated with the Nor’ West Arch – nostalgia, eeriness, grandeur, chaos and airiness.
