About

‘Argentum’ is the old word used for the elemental metal silver, and in this work for flute and piano, elemental sounds are generated and explored. The notes C#D#DE under-pin much of the work, and a range of effects on piano and flute suggest natural sounds – the rustling of vegetation and grasses, dry sticks tapping, wind, the hollow sounds of cave and blow-hole. The use of multiphonics, microtones and flutter-tongue on the flute and percussive effects of fingernails on the piano keys attempt to capture those sounds. The work is in three sections.

Best performed with a grand piano as flautist must direct sound into the piano strings in places.
