the sound a gemmed light traces the organic growth of sonic material from the sound of breathing to a highly coloured mosaic-like texture. The organic treatment of the material is an attempt to solve one of the central compositional problems, that is, the relationship between the perceptual present and the overall composition as a formal entity. How can each individual moment of a composition be given a clear formal function but at the same time possess a degree of autonomy and identity that gives it a significance in a purely gestural sense? The title is taken from one of Ezra Pound’s Cantos.
