About

The text for Whaia te iti kahurangi consists of excerpts from a waiata by Wiremu Kerekere, as well as an extra phrase which is the Māori translation of the Latin school motto. This line of text functions a little like a refrain in the work.

The rhythmic drive of the work is suggestive of Māori haka forms which often have a strong three-in-a-bar energy.
