About
A short cantata (35 mins.) for SATB choir and soloists – alto, soprano, and baritone. There is an optional chorus for children (‘No Lullabies’) The theme is climate change. This is introduced by a chanted karanga of traditional Maori proverbs, followed by evocative settings of poems relating to the beauty of the four seasons interspersed with more ominous treatment of text and music as the implications of climate change are addressed. The music is of moderate difficulty, but one season (Autumn) could possibly be better managed with a semi-chorus. Much of the material can be accessed at www.freemusicscore.co.nz.
The cantata lends itself to a mixed media presentation. Depictions of the four seasons and of the effects of climate change (The Fifth Season) may be screened during performance. There are also quotations from contemporary prophets. The cantata can be performed with organ and/or piano. Some sections are a cappella.
