About

I have a deep respect for Tibetan Buddhism. Though I can't comprehend the mantras, this is no obstacle to my intuitive reception of the luminosity and power they emanate. To my ear, the sound of mantras seems like music of great enchantment!

Wordless Mantras has a delicate intricacy which requires the utmost concentration and focus from the performers. This particular quality of performance brings to mind the way that mantras are recited, or perhaps, what 'being enlightened' means in my imagination.

The work was commissioned by Professor Ye Xiao-gang for his 'Tibet Project' at the Central Conservatory of Music, Beijing.

Performance history

05 Oct 2013: Performed by Helen Pohl and Douglas Beilman (violins) at the Hunter Council Chamber, Victoria University of Wellington as part of 'Journey to the East: Gao Ping Portrait', presented by the Confucius Institute.
