About
This is one of my favourite and most performed pieces, although the first performance was a disaster, and I will say nothing of it or the performers. The first that I wish to remember was given by Nancy White and Vi Graham in Canterbury Cathedral in 1973. It has since been played by various duos, and the slow movement (written in memory of my mother) has been used by David Smith of the Alberni String Quartet in masterclasses. This movement has also been orchestrated by Colin Bayliss and published by Da Capo Music Ltd as Elegy for cello and orchestra (DC233). The Sonata was one of the pieces played at my 75th Birthday concert at Christ Church, Oswestry on May 20th, 1995, by Peggy Tudor (cello) and Nigel Foster (piano).
