About
Having studied Italian earlier in 2009, which lead to a trip to Italy to study that language later that year, I wanted to try setting some Italian poetry. I decided to study one of the greats, Petrarca, but it was a happy accident that the first of Il Canzoniere seemed to instantly fit my purpose.
The piece is inspired by Monteverdi and the early Baroque, whose harmonic simplicity, mixture of tonal and modal languages, lack of harmonic and rhythmic habits and spontaneity was ideal for this piece.
This piece is dedicated to a dear friend of mine.
