About
Will Lawson (1876-1957) has been likened to Kipling, and based much of his poetry on his experiences at sea, and as a fireman on the railways. His poetry was published in both New Zealand Australia, and he settled in the latter country later in life.
The Cruiser is a purely descriptive poem about a battered ship fighting its way into port: '...tottering, weary, crushed but game, groping her blind way home.'
The music sets the poem in a style reminiscent of a sea shanty, with plenty of rhythmic energy.
