About

The original brief for this work was that it be based on a 'good Baptist hymn'. It took me a while to sort out the questions: what does that really mean: 'a good hymn that Baptists sing?', 'good hymn that only Baptists sing?', 'a hymn whose words and/or music was written by a Baptist?' - some combination of the above or something else entirely?

In the end, CWM Rhondda by John Hughes to (most famously) words by William Williams seemed to fit the bill on most counts, and it was all as Welsh as it could possibly be. But the Welsh do claim a certain fame when it comes to music so that didn't seem inappropriate.

Cwm Rhondda was written for the 1907 anniversary of Capel Rhondda, Pontypridd and soon became popular. It was first included in a regular hymnbook in 1933 and all major hymnbooks have included it ever since.
