This work is based on a 12-note theme which is not heard in its entirety until its inverted treatment in the Piu Mosso section (beginning in bar 72).
Harmonies are serially-derived from the theme and its inversion.
In the coda section, which begins with the trombone solo, the theme appears in super-imposed entries (with modifications) reaching a climax with the high sustained trumpet notes.
