About

looking sideways is a collection of five contrasting "moods", linked by three central ideas. The first is the harmonic language. All five sections share the same seven chords, either in order, in a constant state of flux, or as the basis of a melodic line. Contrasting with that dense harmonic language is the sense of space. This is generated by sections of silence, sparse textures and often short, abrupt phrase lengths. The third universal factor is the sense of continual movement. looking sideways never sits still; it is constantly moving ahead and only reaches a sense of stability in the groove of the final section.
