Wai Taranaki

Composer:   Susan Frykberg

About

Wai Taranaki is a rhythmic soundscape based on the role of water in Taranaki. It uses Greek rhythms as an analogy to the ongoing role of water in Taranaki, in combination with snippets of 'found soundscapes'. These come from a variety of sources: Len Lye kenetic scuptures (Govett Brewster, New Plymouth); and two of Susan's previous works including Beyond (Composed for the exhibition of the same name at the Peter Rae Gallery - International Festival of the Arts, Dunedin 2004); and Breathing the Word With Wind and Water (University of Waikato, Hamilton, 2006). The latter includes sounds from Taonga Puoro (Richard Nunns) and students from University of Waikato.
