About
A Moorish Maid opened at His Majesty's Theatre, Auckland on 26 June, 1905 for a season of six nights.
'The opera follows the familiar romantic themes of triumphant love and is interwoven with choruses of Arabs, hockey-girls, nubian slaves and 'riffians' ... The first night was a triumph: 'a perfect hurricane of enthusiasm, vociferous cheering and waving of handkerchiefs.'
Its success encouraged the composer to mount performance seasons in Wellington (September 1905) and Sydney (April 1906). These performances helped to launch the operatic career of Rosina Buckman.
