About

For many years I have conducted and taught students how to read and perform plainchant. Composers assimilate many ideas that resurface in their compositions in response to material from the distant past in addition to their immediate environments.

This composition was inspired by the Kyrie from the plainchant Mass Lux et Origo.

During 1988 I had previously created a Fantasia for brass quintet based on this plainchant. The earlier composition utilises a symmetrical scalar formation which I found lacked warmth. I decided to completely recompose the work using an asymmetrical scalar formation. The resultant counterpoint proved more mellifluous and contained more harmonic colours.
