About
Two Issues Songs was composed in 1990 for the Chilton Saint James Choir at the request of their Musical Director Mrs. Susie Hunter. The words for both Nuclear and Whale came from poems by the students of the Lower Hutt private girls' school.
The choir, under the direction of Susie Hunter, performed the songs in Wellington, Lower Hutt, and Melbourne. The soloist was Amanda Rhodes-Robinson. Nuclear was later performed at the NAMCYA Music Competition for Young Artists at the West Visayas State University Cultural Center by the Ormoc City Division Children's Choir, conducted by Mr. Felizardo F. Tugonon. It has also been performed by The Company, a mixed choir from Onslow College, conducted by the composer with Helen Oliver as soloist.
Gary Wilby has taught in Wellington and Hutt Valley for the last twenty years. He performs in various orchestras and ensembles and currently is the Director and Conductor of both the Island Bay Festival Orchestra and the Capital Performing Arts Orchestra. He completed a M.A. (Hons) in Music Education at the University of Canterbury. He was the Executive Secretary of the Composer's Association of New Zealand for 9 years and in 1995 he held the position Composer-in-Schools based at the Wellington College of Education.
