About
Scored for trumpet, violin and piano, Omarama - Place of Light developed from Preludes of Light for piano, both pieces being completed early in 1987.
The musical structure of Omarama is based on a palindrome of sections which pivot on a central piano solo. In such a form, a lively introduction is balanced by a slow-moving Postlude which features off-stage trumpet. Two contrapuntal sections, two 'tutti' sections (the second marked 'Cosmic Dance') and solos for violin, piano and trumpet complete the journey through this structure.
In 1986, Omarama, which is situated in the lower centre of the South Island of New Zealand, was the site for clear viewing of Halley's Comet and other cosmic delights.
Omarama was commissioned by LYSIS with funding from the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council of New Zealand and the New Zealand Composers Foundation. The work was first performed by LYSIS at the University of Auckland on 15 April 1987
This performance by LYSIS was recorded in March 1987 at the Auckland University School of Music.
