Composition 5 was completed in January 1971 and was first performed at the Cambridge Music School that year by Gary Brain. The blend of the percussion timbres with the electronic music proved to be a most satisfying one, and this process is exploited throughout. There are several synchronisation passages in the work, which require accurate timing on the part of the percussionist. These build tension. As a contrast, the broad layers on the electronic sounds which are derived mainly from filtered white noise, create points of repose. The work has been recorded by Gary Brain on Kiwi Pacific SLD-25.
