Author note
New Zealanders have a powerful, symbiotic connection with the water. We’re never more than 50 kms from the shoreline and our garages are full of tinnies, kayaks and SUPs. Our water is simultaneously our playground, our pantry and our happy place.
Maritime NZ & Safer Boating Forum understand this complex relationship, and it’s a feeling we share with both boaties and paddlecraft users alike. We want to encourage every kind of skipper to respect Aotearoa, the sea, whānau, fellow boaties and water lovers, as well as their passengers. To demonstrate that respect, you need to know the five ways to be safe out on the water.
Wear a lifejacket
Carry 2 waterproof ways to call for help
Check the marine forecast
Leave the alcohol at home
Be a good skipper by looking after your crew by knowing the local trouble spots
Know the ways of the water before you let go of the land. Kia Mataara.
