About

Born in Te Awamutu in 1962, Michael grew up on a musical diet of Beethoven, Mozart and Rachmaninoff, favourites of his Father. Learning the piano (and secretly studying music at school via correspondence), led on to playing keyboard in a band in Auckland at the time of the New Romantic subgenre of New Wave music.

Michael has an abiding love of Italy and has been involved in a number of projects there, including his opera about the Battle of Monte Cassino, The Juniper Passion, of which we hear an excerpt. We also hear an excerpt from Michael’s recent string quartet The Void Between Heartbeats.

The Baby Boomer Composer interview series was produced in partnership with the New Zealand School of Music.

Filmed and edited by Chris Watson for the Resound Project (funded by NZ On Air). Audio recorded by Graham Kennedy.
