About
This double CD of the NZSO National Youth Orchestra commemorates its 50th season. Led by British conductor, Paul Daniel, the orchestra presented a challenging programme of Mahler's Symphony No. 7 and works featuring two outstanding young New Zealand artists. John Chen joined the orchestra in a performance of Maurice Ravel's Piano Concerto for the left hand (and an encore from Schubert's Moments Musicaux); and the concert opened with Only to the Highest Mountain by 2009 NZSO-NYO composer in residence, Natalie Hunt.
The CDs are presented as a direct broadcast and include a speech by Wilma Smith, former concertmaster of the NZSO and leader of the NYO, together with an interview with the orchestra's founder John Hopkins. The music was recorded in Auckland Town Hall on July 10 2009.
