The Dominion String Quartet help celebrate Alfred Hill's Birthday with a performance of his String Quartets no.s 7 and 9. Complimentary birthday cake will be served!
Alfred Hill was born in Melbourne on December 16, 1869. He lived in Auckland from the age of two and in Wellington from five until seventeen after which he began studies at the Royal Conservatorium of Music in Leipzig. From 1891 he lived principally in Wellington and from 1910 he resumed residency in Sydney.
"The Dominion String Quartet":http://sounz.org.nz/news_articles/show/133: Yury Gezentsvey, Rosemary Harris, violins; Donald Maurice, viola; David Chickering, cello; was formed specifically to record the 17 string quartets by Alfred Hill on the Naxos label. Two of the projected six CDs have been recorded and released: "Volume 1 with Hill's String Quartets no.s 1, 2 and 3":http://sounz.org.nz/manifestations/show/7626, and more recently "Volume 2 with String Quartets no.s 4, 6 and 8":http://sounz.org.nz/manifestations/show/9190. The two works in this concert will be on the Vol.3 CD which is currently in production. Some of the concert proceeds will go towards this recording project. The Wadestown Presbyterian Church also supports a Global Mission Project and the other portion of the proceeds will go to this cause.
