Kolja Blacher, a former concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic, performs as both soloist and conductor in this concert. Opening with the final work in Christopher Blake’s Northland Panels string cycle, the mood spans the pastoral tranquility of The Lark Ascending and the charm and verve of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto, to the frenetic power of Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony, the brilliantly-realised orchestration of his eighth string quartet.
Christopher Blake's Christ at Whangape, for string orchestra is the fourth in a set of works, written and performed separately, that were inspired by artist Colin McCahon's Northland Panels. The other three are: Angel at Ahipara, Anthem on the Kaipara and Night Journey To Pawarenga.
