In this free concert NZTrio — one of New Zealand’s most active and vibrant chamber ensembles — will perform the finalists’ works in the inaugural NZTrio Composing Competition.
This competition was open to student composers from around the country. A total of 41 scores were submitted to the competition, from which 10 winning works were selected:
Alex van den Broek | View from Mt Peel Josiah Carr | still: waiting Trevor Coleman | Lilburn Blue Glen Downie | Extrapolation Matthew Everingham | A Search for a Language Reuben Jelleyman | Analysis/Synthesis Zac Johns | Snap Jeremy Mayall | Fourteen moments for three Caitlin Morris | The Song of Cloudy Bay/Te Koko-o-Kupe Isaac Shatford | Aeroplanes Over Aotearoa
Together with composer Kenneth Young, the NZTrio selected the winners 'based on the strength and originality of the scores, as well as considering how authentically and meaningfully each composer responded to the brief to 'write a new work for Piano Trio that references, or responds to, Douglas Lilburn's life and work'.
