Al Fraser | Taonga Puoro
Phil Boniface | Double Bass
'Ponguru' is a conversation between ancient and contemporary voices.
With 'Ponguru', Al Fraser and Phil Boniface bring together the many voices of ngā taonga pouro and the low voice of the double bass in an exploration of timbre, space, melody, and our shared musical language. Working in collaboration with Steve Garden, 'Ponguru' has been released through Rattle Records to wide acclaim.
This performance at The National War Memorial Carillon features original compositions and improvisations from 'Ponguru', as well as new music developed from concerts Al and Phil have performed throughout Aotearoa and abroad. The music from 'Ponguru' has been toured with Chamber Music New Zealand and performed in Melbourne at the Tilde New Music Festival in 2019.
Limited seating is available so please bring a cushion to ensure your comfort.
