Kenneth Young - Conductor Karin Schaupp - Guitar
Mendelssohn:The Hebrides Overture Butterworth:The Banks of Green Willow Rodrigo: Conciert de Aranjuez Kenneth Young: Douce Tristesse Mozart: Symphony No. 39
Folk song and nature are the inspiration for much of this programme. Rodrigo's ever-popular Concierto de Aranjuez, to be performed by Brisbane-based Karin Schaupp, was inspired by the gardens at Palacio de Aranjuez:"the fragranceof magnolias, the singing of birds, and the gushing of fountains". It was two English folk songs that inspired Butterworth's The Banks of Green Willow, while Mendelssohn's sunny overture was inspired by his visit to Fingal's Cave in the Hebrides. A pastoral style pervades Wellington-based Kenneth Young's Douce Tristesse, and in a rare occurence the composer will be conducting his own work in this concert. The final work is one of Mozart's last three symphonies which are described as the summit of the creative output by one of the greatest composers.
