Margaret Mahy was one of New Zealand’s most acclaimed children’s writers. Having authored 120 titles with translations into 15 languages for many readers across the globe.
In this special tribute concert we will bring to life, through the imaginative and engaging music of Christchurch composer Philip Norman, some of the authors well-loved characters. Many of her story plots have strong supernatural elements but her writing concentrates on the themes of human relationships and growing up, there’s humour, fantasy and adventure.
Philip Norman’s work as a composer spans the breadth of the performing arts with works for ballets, operas, choirs and orchestra and in 2003 was commissioned by the Christchurch Schools’ Music Festival to create the Ravenous Uncles (And many Thin Greedy Aunts) an exotical blend of four fantastamalogical songs on poems by Margaret Mahy.
The beautifully talented Juliet Reymolds Midgely and Tainui Kuru will lead us on this musical adventure.
The orchestra was privileged to perform with Margaret Mahy in 2009 and we are delighted to once again be bringing her stories to the stage.
