Water, or the lack of it, and an environmental disaster have inspired some of the music in this programme which features one of New Zealand’s finest chamber ensembles, the world’s leading authority on Maori instruments and composers from Australia, New Zealand, Japan and France. Gareth Farr’s collaboration with Richard Nunns pays tribute to the late Toru Takemitsu, and just as Takemitsu was much influenced by the music of Ravel, whose masterly Trio concludes the concert, so too were Ravel and his French contemporaries – artists and composers – drawn to Japan and other oriental or Pacific locations for inspiration.
This event is part of the 2011 City of London Festival.
