Conducted by Uwe Grodd, Manukau Symphony Orchestra joins forces with Auckland Choral to present Leonie Holmes’ The Journey, an exhilarating, festive work commissioned by Manukau Symphony Orchestra for the official opening of the Genesis Energy Theatre at the TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre in 2005.

No less poignant and refreshing is the world premiere of Robin Toan’s concertino for four woodwind instruments (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon) and orchestra – featuring Manukau Symphony Orchestra’s own principal wind musicians. Robin, like Leonie, writes uplifting music inspired by the great classic composers, with soaring melodies and beautiful harmonies – ‘new’ music that audiences can enjoy and relate to very easily.

And as grand finale – Fauré’s sumptuous Requiem, following traditional mass practices of the time, but as Fauré said in his own words “I wanted to write something different” – resulting in a work that has been loved for more than a century!
