This is a very special New Zealand Music Month concert aimed at school students as part of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra's Education Programme. Marc Taddei concucts the APO in the performance of two concertos by two Johns: the APO's current Composer in Residence John Psathas and Auckland-based composer/organist John Wells.
John Psathas has written djinn, a concerto for marimba and orchestra to be performed by Portugese percussionist Pedro Carneiro. [The two have collaborated before along with pianist Michael Houstoun on the double concerto "View from Olympus":http://sounz.org.nz/manifestations/show/7461 .] John Wells is both composer and soloist for the Organ Concerto which will feature the newly restored Auckland Town Hall pipe organ.
The concert will begin with a performance of Ascent of the Blessed by Stephen Clothier, winner of the 2009 APO Secondary Composer's Competition.
The pieces will be narrated and explained at the concert. A helpful study guide has been produced by the APO and "can be downloaded as a pdf here":http://sounz.org.nz/content/2010_APODiscovery_Study_guide.pdf.
