This concert is the closing event for a weekend reunion of The Paihiatua Children, the Polish refugee children who arrived from war-torn Europe 65 years ago. At least 400 ex-refugees plus their families are expected. The governor will also be present and so will Lech Walesa (Nobel Peace Prize winner, past leader of the Solidarity (Solidarność) free trade union movement in Poland, and former Polish president) together with diplomatic guests.
The concert presented by the "SMP Ensemble":http://www.smpensemble.com will feature the past and present music of Polish composers (Henryk Górecki, Witold Lutosławski, Krzysztof Penderecki, Karol Szymanowski) as well as commissions from New Zealand composers. While this concert is primarily for attendees of the reunion, concerts on Friday 6 November and Saturday 7 November are intended for a wider audience.
