The Auckland Wind Orchestra is ‘all hands on deck’ for their upcoming sea-themed family concert in Devonport under the baton of conductor Ashley Hopkins.
The AWO will be performing a range of much-loved original and arranged works for concert band from Chattaway’s Parade of the Tall Ships featuring noble brass sections and cheeky upper reeds whizzing around the sailor’s hornpipe, to movie highlights from the stirring Pirates of the Caribbean. To encourage the attendance of younger audiences, children dressed up as a pirate can attend the concert for just $5!
Also on offer is a special treat in the form of a small ensemble made up of players in the band performing Gordon Jacob’s exquisite Old Wine in New Bottles, a colourful adaption of British Sea Shanties. Other works include Three Folk Songs of the Sea by New Zealand composer David Hamilton, The Sea and Sinbad’s Ship from Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade Gliere’s Russian Sailor’s Dance, Gordon Langford’s Fantasy on British Sea Songs and McBeth’s atmospheric Of Sailors and Whales.
