Listen/Rita is the main project for Silencio Ensemble in 2009. It has been developed as a public programme for the Rita Angus exhibition currently showing at Christchurch Art gallery.
I paint colour as a woman sees and hears...you may one day 'see' a little music in my paintings.: Rita Angus
Seeing music and hearing painting - LISTEN / RITA is a composition of music, images and words intended to open the senses to the complexity of relationships we may experience in our attention to works of art.
The music of Douglas Lilburn becomes a framework through which the Silencio Ensemble examines both the life and work of Angus and her faithful sense of observation to detail. Through the act of listening itself, to sound but also to our natural and cultural environments, this concert considers the continuity and meaning of their work for the present.
Silencio hopes to add its voices to a contemporary conversation not only about Angus, but also the relationships that exist between artist, work and audience, which are themselves reflections on the details of time, people and place.
This concert will be repeated tomorrow evening (4th July).
