Over these two days the 18 semi-finalists in the 2009 "Michael Hill 2009 International Violin Competition":http://www.michaelhillinternationalviolincompetition.com/index.php will be tested on their performance of sonatas from the Romantic era alongside their fiery 'show pieces' and the specially commissioned solo work Wakatipu by Gareth Farr. At the conclusion of Saturday's performances the top six competitors to go on to Round III of the competition will be announced.
Wakatipu was made possible through the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra's Composer in Residence programme and Creative New Zealand. Gareth was the APO Composer in Residence in 2007 and 2008.
