The Auckland Symphony Orchestra, a community group of some 80+ players, present the first of their 2009 Free Family Concerts, conducted by Gary Daverne. These free, orchestral concerts are just over one hour in duration, without an interval and feature a programme of popular orchestral favourites with a 'dance' theme including works by Smetana, Weber and Tchaikovsky.
Along with the help of some local young dancers, the soloists are brilliant young South Korean violinist, Esther Kin and Dargaville born accordionist, Kevin Friedrich.
Now based in New York Kevin Friedrich is also President of the Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes (CIA) and this performance will be the first event in celebration of the newly established CIA World Accordion Day. World wide performances are being coordinated on or near May 6th, the official date of World Accordion Day and the date of the original accordion patent, as a means of bringing increased awareness to the diversity and popularity of the accordion and the many musical genres in which it is found.
