Two of New Zealand's premier pianists present the premiere of a new work by Mike Nock.
Michael Houstoun and Diedre Irons will play Southern Suite, a work especially commissioned for the Festival of Colour. Other piano duets in the programme include work by Poulenc, Mendelssohn and Bizet.
Southern Suite takes its inspiration from the southern landscape and has section titles like ‘Copland Crossing’ and ‘Wanaka Dreaming’. Mike Nock says, “They are my emotional responses to aspects of the landscape, to memories and feelings. I wanted to write a piece of music that would be fun to play, interesting and exciting to hear, and convey some sense of the mystery and awe of the Southern Alps.”
Mike Nock and Michael Houstoun have developed a strong musical and artistic relationship over the last few years with appearances at previous festivals including Wanaka, Christchurch and the Wellington Jazz Festival 2009 with a double bill programme and Houstoun included 12 Nock pieces on his Tui-award winning "Inland":http://sounz.org.nz/manifestations/show/8077 album.
