A combined choir from Palmerston North churches led by Roy Tankersley, Director of music at St Andrews-in-the-City came together to present a programme of Carols and Poems for a New Zealand Christmas. The St Andrews-in-the-City Handbellringers also accompanied some of the carols. Solos were featured from Margaret Jones and Jono Taylor, Mayor of Palmerston North.
For the most part, the carols are to be found in Carol Our Christmas published by the New Zealand Hymnbook Trust. (A CD featuring 24 of these carols is also available.) The poems were also by New Zealand writers: Denis Glover, Nola Borrell, Joy Cowley, RAK Mason.
John Thornley, participant and Trustee of the NZ Hymnbook Trust, comments that: "When Roy Tankersley’s Bellringers group accompanied Peace to the world - a '60s anthem from the late Willow Macky - this was likely to be the first public performance of this song in a church since she sang it, solo, in Auckland and Wellington coffee bars in the 60s!"
