Te Tai Tokerau, Tauranga Moana and Ngāti Kahungunu ki Te Wairoa
Mohi Wati Te Rau Allen, known professionally as MOHI was born and raised in West Auckland and is a singer-songwriter and guitar player.
MOHI went to Ngā Kākano o Te Kaihanga kura and in his final years of school, he and a couple of his friends started a group called Ngā Puāwaitanga, a 5-piece reggae, roots, soul band. In 2022 he released his Debut EP Moments, with a mix of English and Te Reo tracks. His neosoul, pop, and funk melodies intermingle seamlessly with elements of traditional Māori instrumentation, creating a soundscape that is as eclectic as it is enchanting. From the depths of the ancient Māori traditions to the rhythms of the bustling urban streets, MOHI's music celebrates the rich tapestry of culture in Aotearoa.
MOHI has since toured with Troy Kingi and opened for House of Shem before being announced as the Waiata Māori Music Awards Most Promising Emerging Artist of 2022. With a string of chart-topping hit singles under his belt, MOHI's music has struck a chord with listeners from all walks of life across the globe. His latest album “Elements of Aroha” with four singles topping the NZ Music Singles Charts 2023/24.
MOHI recently clinched the coveted APRA MAIOHA AWARD for his waiata "Me Pēhea Rā." This prestigious accolade stands as a testament to his exceptional songwriting and cultural contributions to the music industry. MOHI also has been nominated for the “Best Māori Artist” and the “Mana Reo” awards at this year’s Aotearoa Music Awards 2024.
On October 27th 2024, MOHI released his highly-anticipated new album, Elements of Aroha. Recently he was a part of the Waiata Nation 2 series on Māori TV. This project documented the recording and production of his new single, E Kii, and the music video.
MOHI's musical journey is deeply rooted in his Māori heritage. Drawing from the timeless stories and traditions of his tūpuna (ancestors), he passionately champions the Māori language by weaving Te Reo Māori into his compositions.
