Biography

Harry Stephen Henry Hiscocks was born in NZ, probably in Auckland, where his father was the organist at St. Patrick's Cathedral. Harry learnt to sing, to play the piano and organ, and to arrange music. At 19 he wrote a Coronation March for the coronation of King Edward VII. A copy was sent to England and was duly acknowledged by the King's Private Secretary. In due course, Hiscocks himself became organist at St. Patrick's Cathedral. After the First World War he was appointed organist at the Catholic Cathedral in Christchurch.

The Nocturne is part of a longer piece called The Angelus, dedicated to the sisters of St. Joseph. It is one of twelve of his works held by Musical Heritage NZ.
