Biography
Rosemary Russell grew up in a musical vicarage family, primarily singing hymns. At eight years old, she was exposed to the choral music of the Auckland Cathedral under Sir Peter Godfrey. At Canterbury University she studied with John Cousins and David Sell. She also studied piano with Wallace Woodley and Rae de Lisle.
Rosemary was a foundation member of the Festival Singers of Wellington in 1976 and worked for over 20 years as a secondary school music teacher. She taught at Tawa Primary School for ten years and at Queen Margaret College for nine. She currently assists and sings in both the Orpheus Choir and Nota Bene and is HOD Music at Sacred Heart College in Lower Hutt. She is engaged in many musical pursuits, including singing, playing the piano, conducting and composing.
For me, the voice is a way to access the soul and to experience the divine. Compositions are often the fruit of significant human experience, brought into the light with much toil. Respecting this, results in a rich performance.
