Biography
Richard Haynes was born in Brisbane, studied at Griffith University, Australia (Bachelor of Music Advanced Performance) and at the Hochschule der Künste Bern, Switzerland (Soloist Diploma). He resides in Cologne, Germany. Richard is a clarinettist of Stroma (NZ), ELISION (Australia) and Praesenz (Germany), has been guest musician with 175 East (NZ), CIKADA (Norway), Ensemble Modern (Germany), Ensemble musikFabrik (Germany), Ensemble Garage (Germany) and Klangforum Wien (Austria) at festivals such as Paris Autumn Festival, Warsaw Autumn, MaerzMusik Berlin, Ultraschall Berlin, Festival Musica Strasbourg and the Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne International Arts Festivals; as an improviser and soloist (Listen my secret fetish and Ramparts of the Heavens) at festivals in Auckland, Hong Kong, Leipzig, Liverpool, London, Los Angeles and Melbourne.
With Stroma and 175 East, Richard has performed as soloist in works by Richard Barrett (knospend-gespaltener), Aaron Cassidy (asphyxia), James Gardner (a study for voicing doubts), György Kurtág (Króo György), Michael Norris (tesseræ...interstices), Giacinto Scelsi (Kya), Jeroen Speak (Epiesodos and Silk Dialogue VI, the latter commissioned by Richard Haynes), Iannis Xenakis (Échange) and Isang Yun (Piri), has been part of first performances of works by Helen Bowater, John Croft, David Downes, Alexandra Hay, Samuel Holloway, Dugal McKinnon, Jenny McLeod, Michael Norris and John Young, including those during the 2007 Asia-Pacific Composers’ League Festival (Wellington) and NZ Music Month 2009. Since 2006, Richard has been a part of performances with 175 East in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch and with Stroma in Wellington and Hong Kong. Richard was a featured artist at the 2008 Sound Invention Convention, Auckland alongside James Gardner and Johnny Chang. The music of Denis Smalley forms part of his doctoral thesis on gesture in spatialised performance.
Richard has recorded works by Richard Barrett, Alban Berg, Olav Berg, Aaron Cassidy, Brian Ferneyhough, Robert Dahm, Chris Dench, James Gardner, Bryn Harrison, Guus Janssen, Liza Lim, Theo Loevendie, Michael Schneider, Jeroen Speak and Johannes Maria Staud for CD release and broadcast.
